Although most patients understand the importance of “doctor’s orders,” DR. JAMES A. SHAER at Youngstown Orthopaedic Associates likes to think of orthopedic care as a joint effort between the doctor and the patient.
“I encourage a common-sense approach and joint decisions,” Dr. Shaer said. “We will look at the big picture as to how to help you either overcome a problem or adapt and improve your function.
“We will evaluate your situation thoroughly and work diligently to solve your problem. We’ll also ensure that various options for management will be discussed.”
Naval background
Dr. Shaer has practiced orthopedic medicine since 1998 and has been with YOA for nearly two years. He has also worked as a surgeon in the U.S. Navy in Charleston, S.C., and the Persian Gulf and as a trauma surgeon at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown.
Dr. Shaer’s work focuses on fracture care and musculoskeletal injuries as well as general orthopedics.
His career has been marked by determination and good communication.
“I don’t wilt in the face of adversity,” Dr. Shaer said. “I’ve learned to overcome situations where the odds are against me by working hard and making good choices.
“I’m also comfortable relating and communicating with people from all walks of life.”
Focus areas
With greater numbers of younger patients having joint replacement surgeries, Dr. Shaer sees a lot of cases with fractures occurring around total joints. This is one of his focus areas, which makes his practice different from those of many orthopedic specialists.
“These are very tough problems and technically challenging,” he said.
Dr. Shaer also sees many patients with osteoporosis, a condition marked by fragile bones that can easily fracture.
He emphasizes safety, healthy eating and routine exercise to promote better bone health.
“Be safe,” Dr. Shaer said. “If you use a cane or walker, don’t forget it or take an unnecessary chance by saying ‘It’s only a couple steps to the bathroom, I don’t need a walker.’
“It’s important to exercise routinely, eat healthy and start early on establishing strong bone, avoiding tobacco products and excessive soft drinks,” he said.
Why YOA?
The primary strength of YOA as an orthopedic surgery practice is the quality care its surgeons deliver, Dr. Shaer said.
“Our team includes multiple specialists trained in solving complex problems,” he said. “We also have outstanding therapists.”
